I used to live in the South Island where many US expatriates think they can be safe. They misread the culture. We are nice and polite and do not disagree. Then we take out our aggression in contact sports, hunting, and endurance activities.

I now live in the North Island, in a small community. Where I am trying to become a local as fast as I can do so.

It does not matter what your income is. Our current trajectory is predictable to anyone who has read history. Get out of towns. Live modestly. avoid debt. Be quiet. Build networks. Setting up a system but not living where it is means that if you survive bugging out you will be a target

Hahaha.

Very amusing to see and to know that the idea of these are true. It's so crazy that they don't just address some of the underlying problems - at this point, the plebs would be happy for so little in terms of reforms that a little would likely go a long way towards stopping a slave revolt.

But no! Can't have that! We must MAXIMIZE MARGINS! And we see how that works with fragile supply lines in an age of wars, tariffs, and uncertainty.

"It’s as if they want to build a car that goes fast enough to escape from its own exhaust."

I might use that line.

Have you ever had a car that *couldn't* drive faster than its exhaust?

I think they will develop the way the west developed during the 50s and 60s, by creating a solid and massive middle class with very high living standards.

Let's just hope that they avoid the mistake of letting the financiers out of a very tight leash.

Lappe is author of the 1971 book _Diet for a Small Planet_; i.e. a neo-Malthusian in addition to whatever else she might be.
